A number of sites provide parental guidance on safety for kids on the internet. The UK DfEE and Becta have published a free pack to help schools ensure that pupils benefit from the vast wealth of the Internet in an appropriate and safe way and the pack contains much of value for pupils, parents and carers. You can download the information sheets (Pdf format) by following this link: Superhighway Safety. This is the online version of the official government guidance.

The main danger to vulnerable children is the chat forums, should they choose to reveal their identity to others or meet up. See more in the newly published Chat danger

What you need to know as a parent from the Consumer Federation of America

Parents' guides to the Internet are also to be found on the BBC Education Webwise website.

Childnet International is a UK-based non-profit organisation which works around the world to promote children's interests in international communications. You will find more information about international inititatives to protect children on this site.

What to do if you find something unsavoury...

If you or your children find anything you think is illegal or offensive on a site, you can complain to your internet service provider (ISP), the Internet Watch Foundation (www.internetwatch.org.uk) or even the police. Safe surfing!
